I see the empty space where you used to lay at night. Your scent still permeates from your pillow. Without you, all I have is a letter you wrote. You told me to follow my heart, stand my ground, and bear my name with pride. I didn’t know what those words meant at first, but on my own, I understand. You gave me strength, even though you’re no longer by my side. No matter how much I feel like my world is falling apart, I remember those words, and I recite them over and over again. Between those lines, you told me how much you loved me and believed in me, and that tells me that everything will be alright.

i love this piece for several reasons: first, it documents a fact that bedevils the magnanimous mind – the selfless things they do while with people are never appreciated while they are still around. second, and this derives from the first, the things we learn from selfless people seem harsh when they are said or done, and they are disliked or thought insensitive until much later when the veracity of what they said or did starts to unravel (to help the one who received it). third, and this derives from the second, people we consider insensitive when we are together, usually leave us with a life-long lesson for how to approach life. fourth, selfless people are missed long after they are gone, but the fact that the good lessons they teach are appreciated long after they are gone – is what keeps them doing what at first seems inconsiderate, insensitive and harsh. finally, i love this piece because it warns people about the disadvantages of not seeing the positive in people when we are with them. that people should not be blinded by rainbows, that people must learn to separate a lesson to be learned from the (sometimes obnoxious) personality of the person that ‘teaches’ it. brilliant post, Sarah.

Damn that was powerful I liked the part where it mentioned her repeating “follow your heart” etc to herself. That self referential line bright it full circle for me. Awesome post.

I could feel the passion within your words, keep up the good work
