Only One of Us Gets to be a Martyr

It was the defiance in your gaze that caught my eye at first. The way you did the opposite of what anyone told you, for the sake of proving them wrong. Sometimes you succeeded, and sometimes you didn’t. But it never stopped you from being you. Down to the core. Making your own way, on your own terms. Maybe that was what fascinated me for so long. What left me in awe. Maybe it was some of the things you said. What left me speechless.

(But I’m restless,
full of
condescension,
ruling my own city without mandate or
consensus, putting up
fences, making
contestants of
first
impressions,
taking something so breakable as penance
and helping it
be bent
in pieces.)

Now Available: Nicole Lyons’ Blossom and Bone

Sudden Denouement Publishing is thrilled to announce
that Nicole Lyons stunning third book of poetry,
Blossom and Bone, has been officially released.

Praise for Blossom and Bone:

“A beautifully crafted work of art that will punch you in the
face with its gritty realism before soothing your wounds with
elegant prose, thought provoking lines, and sublime imagery.”
– Samuel Decker Thompson, author of Our Fucked Up Hearts

“Lyons is connecting on a primal level here, all the while brilliantly
splitting herself along dual lines. She draws an effortless
parallel between desire to live and acceptance she cannot beat
death.”
– Nicholas Gagnier, author of Leonard The Liar

Two Parts – A Sudden Denouement Collaboration

She was a breath of fresh air
He grew up in the tenements
She was a mountain range
He was that sweet something
After too much saltiness
She grew up listening to country
He was her first taste of jazz

She was his first night under the stars. His first taste of the wild. She was the reprieve he needed from the concrete and smog. He brought her excitement and city lights, but still danced with her under the moonlight. He showed her that there was more to her world, just as she did for him. At last, they felt like two parts made whole….

Penance – A Sudden Denouement Collaboration

I said I’d be your wings,
so you hired a flat-felled seamstress
who
topstitched me to your back.

Save me, you say
when jumping off bridges.

And this is my penance,
hoping you would thrive —
not take risks with your life.

But yet, there you are,
jumping with blind faith…

Bereft – A Sudden Denouement Collaboration

I’m parched
A pariah
Desolate
Dehydrated by lack
Of human touch

No matter how surrounded I am by all the warm bodies, I’m bereft. Longing to be held. To be seen. To be touched. By you. But, here I stand, desperate for a drink of contact with no drop in sight….

A Call for Survivors – Blood Into Ink

Blood into Ink and Whisper and the Roar are looking for survivors to share their stories, hope and light in an interview.

At Blood into Ink and Whisper and the Roar, our curators, collective members and contributors have all opened their hearts and souls to share their stories of survival. Now, we would like to hear from you, our readers, and what makes you a survivor.

I cannot be the only one who watches people walk past and wonder what shaped them, wonder why they get out of bed in the morning and what I could learn from them. When I first joined Blood into Ink and Whisper and the Roar I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to call myself a survivor. In comparison to other members, I had hardly been to hell and back. Yet, I have been shown that ‘survivor’ isn’t a trophy you fight for in a competition, it isn’t bestowed nor taken away, it isn’t a label. It is a mindset. It is the desire to keep enjoying the taste of air and the sound leaves make in the wind. It is the drive to live through midnight and morning. In a simpler sense, if you believe you fought to be where you are today either against another or yourself, you can say you survived and will continue to.

If you would like to be interviewed about your story, please read this post.

Introducing Indie Blu(e)

Indie Blu(e) was founded by Kindra Austin, Jimmi Campkin, and Christine Ray in 2018 as a vehicle to support both self-published writers and those published through small independent presses, as well as the readers who are passionate about independent writing. The concept for Indie Blu(e) grew out of the seed of the idea that individually independent writers have reach through word of mouth and social media, but that this reach could grow significantly if they networked with other independent writers to shine a spotlight on their collected body of work.

The founders of Indie Blu(e) want to offer a home for curated writers to promote their books, provide readers with honest, thoughtfully crafted book reviews and the opportunity to learn more about the member writers. Indie Blu(e) strives to be a hub for the type of edgy, high-quality writing that the founders love to read and want to share with a broader community of readers.

Be sure to check them out, there’s plenty more to come!

Also, if you use Instagram,
I’m going to launch Indie Blu(e)’s page
and will share all sorts of great content.
I look forward to seeing you there!
