Former Selves

Poetry

“Because there’s always been
something about you that calls to me.
Like time and space can’t separate us.”

Sometimes I feel something linger around me from a former life. I can sense it haunting me, the memories, the souls I’ve touched, the mark I left upon this world. Sometimes I sense you, too. Because there’s always been something about you that calls to me. Like time and space can’t separate us. Like we are always searching for one another, whether we are aware of it or not. When I feel you surrounding me in the wind, I feel like I am lost. Back in the time when we were us. And I feel your emptiness.

I can’t help but wonder
if you feel it, too.

  1. The last lines made my heart ache. It’s a surreal feeling that seems impossible not to be real for you and the other person as well. Not knowing can haunt you. However, maybe not knowing is better than knowing…

    1. How right you are. This instance was more of a hypothetical. I wasn’t sure at the time if I wanted to expand on this idea. Thinking back, I’m thinking I probably do. It’s such a heartbreaking premise, but a story is worth telling there.

  2. “I can sense it haunting me, the memories, the souls I’ve touched, the mark I left upon this world.” This whole line gave me goosebumps and that whole “I want to write a story about this” feeling. I especially love the idea of sensing the mark one left behind.
