Everything I Couldn’t Be

“You, my love, are everything
I couldn’t be, way back when.
And I will fight for you
to stay that way.”

Darling, you don’t ever have to worry about me. Because I would give anything — do anything — just to keep you safe. I will maintain that beautiful innocence of yours for as long as I can. You are the light in my life, and the breath in my lungs. You are everything to me. You are worth it.

You are the greatest gift. The ultimate achievement. You are light and pure. Bright and bubbly. Innocent. You are everything I couldn’t be, way back when. For that little girl that missed out on that kind of life, I want you to live it. I will fight for you if I have to. And I would sacrifice everything to make sure you can be this happy kid as long as possible.

That little girl grew up with claws.

For the little boy in my life
that calls me a beautiful princess
whenever I wear a dress.
The one who looks at me
and doesn’t see something
lost and broken.
He sees someone beautiful.
He sees me for who I am
and loves me all the same.

How could I have been so lucky?

This was written for day twenty-four
of November Notes.
