I spent so much time trying to save you
that I forgot to come up for air.
The exertion and the weight became too much and we both started to sink. It felt like I stabbed us both in the back, and robbed us of our lives. But really, it was you that wanted me to drown with you. And by the time I realized what was happening, it was too late to try to save myself. So I stopped thrashing and held your face. Through the turquoise waters, in our last moments together, I saw peace in your eyes. The gratitude you felt that we were both letting go. And in that moment, I was ready. It was you and me and the water that surrounded is. Then the world we shared faded to black.
