You And Me

In these
cold nights,
I wonder,
at what point
did we stop
being us
and turned into
you and me?

      1. 3-times divorced gives a certain insightful perspective… Too bad I didn’t know enough about friendship to hold it at that and not let myself get talked into the “relationships”. Now though I have 3 life-long friends. It took work to get it turned around, and the “S” thing, so overrated (IMO), had to get out of the picture. Friendship is a whole lot less complicated and it doesn’t care if it’s “us,” “you and me,” or “you guys”! I think that what happens in a romantic relationship is that the mind starts to long for the freedom she had before she got enmeshed in an exclusive relationship – exceptions, however rare, noted.

  1. Excellent, Sarah. I recently submitted a story to a contest with a line around that same concept. “Back when we were an ‘us’ and a ‘we,’ instead of a ‘you’ and ‘I.'”
There’s actually a communication theory that explores how the subtle shift of the use of terms like “we” and “us” to the use of “I” and “me” is a strong indicator of the deterioration of a relationship. What’s interesting is that people usually aren’t consciously choosing to use the different terms. I think it’s one of those things that we become aware of in hindsight.
