Your love was like a cigarette, addictive, yet bad for my health. Every breath was filled with you and your drug flowed through my veins. But with each drag I took and still crave, you’re a habit I need to quit. With each exhalation, I’m abandoning the wreckage you left behind, letting it go. Because I’m better than that.

Love is addictive. And the reason we get addicted to loving somebody, even if it hurts, is because we make the person we love the person for whom we would do anything. For whom our love would make us go to the ends of the Earth.
I believe that’s our flaw. We should make ourselves the person we love the most and do whatever makes us the most happiest.

That’s very true, we do put more stock into other people than we do in ourselves.

So many relationships like this in the world.
Wonderful imagery! You can instantly connect with how the narrator feels.

I really like this line: “With each exhalation, I’m abandoning the wreckage you left behind, letting it go.” It’s like she’s pushing all of his bad air out of her body. 🙂

Again, so well written, I can feel the struggle going on; I can sense that she’s not going to make it but go back to her addiction. In my interpretation the last line is a hook desperately thrown in the water with no bait on it. PS: maybe I know too many addicts and my view is jaded!

No you’re right. It can also stand as a metaphor. A person. But the same principle applies.
