These bones, ripped from the bodies of the innocent, lay before me, bleached by the sun and trapped in this world upon unconsecrated ground, will find no peace until The One returns with the ashes of their destructors. Only then will the ground be consecrated and their languid souls be purged from this earthly plain.

What a fun idea–how come I didn’t realise you were doing that. Prompting from book titles?

Nice picture and story! Reminds me of the Cimiterio Fontanelle.

Oh, I’m not familiar with that one. What is it?

Sorry, it’s an ossuary in Naples (Italy) where the bones are piled up in fantastic designs. The YouTube link is worth a watch.

I know you always have a very good reason for the words you choose… but… “languid” strikes a discordant note in relation to the topic. What say you? 🙂

So, I’m basically saying that the souls, or ghosts of the dead are floating around, listless, but not yet at peace. Languid sort of encompasses that smooth fluidity

Is this inspired by The Lovely Bones, or from it? It is very powerful.

For the month of May I’ve been doing prompts based upon book titles. The pieces can be inspired by the content, the title itself, or just using the title as a spring board for something new. I’ve read the book and seen the movie, but this piece was just written with a pile of bones in mind. 😊

The images are powerful. Just curious, why did you decide on a prose poem for this one?

Usually what I write are prose poems, as I don’t typically follow any kind of set structure, such as haiku. This particular story, told in a prose poem, required a little bit more depth than my usual pieces, which are often shorter and sometimes considered micropoetry.
