Brothers

Walking
Side by side
Down the narrow strip
Of green grass and dirt

Brothers padded
Soundlessly into the
Early morning light
Looking for their next meal

With the smell of milk
Wafting through the air
Big brother wondered
What they’d find

Knowing it would
Never be enough
Endless searching
Until they stumbled

On a little girl, holding
Out a bowl
Full of warm milk
They drank

Bellies full
She scooped them up
Took them home
Never to starve again
